This is a brief introduction to a blog post about Tom and Jerry. It is full of cartoons from 1939 through 1962. Tom and Jerry are an American media franchise, created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. It started as a series of theatrical short subjects that had been released from 1940 to 1957, then continued on television as one of the longest running shows in history with 20 more years on air for a total of 161 episodes plus four Tom and Jerry made-for-TV movies for a grand total of 195 episodes which also includes three more cartoons called The Jasper Show (1947), The Little Orphan Annie Show (1949) and Fred Quimby's Top Cat (1955). In 1953, the popularity of the cartoon caused it to be turned into a theatrical feature film. The first Tom and Jerry cartoon released as a feature was Injun Trouble (1953). In 1966, Technicolor, Hanna-Barbera Productions and MGM Studios produced a special called "Tom and Jerry: The Movie" that became the first successful theatrical feature-length cartoon. The film was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. It featured Yogi Bear as an alternate character in the voice of Don Messick and debuted on April 18, 1966 in 231 theaters and it grossed $2. 9 million (strangely enough, Tom and Jerry was not even mentioned in the film's credits. This would be Tom and Jerry's last theatrical cartoon for 41 years) After seeing how successful "The Movie" was, 11 more Tom and Jerry cartoons were released as features between 1967 and 1990 with five of them being animated by the Hanna-Barbera crew. The rest of the cartoons were animated by John K. Smith, Bill Lava, Chuck Jones, Ted Avery or Burt Gillett on individual shows. Tom and Jerry was the last of the old style theatrical cartoon features, with recaps of scenes from previously released shorts. But one of them, "The Mansion Cat" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1974. The last theatrical Tom and Jerry release was called "The Karate Guard". A year later, Hanna-Barbera Productions sold its studio to Turner Entertainment Co. A 1990 attempt to revive the series with a feature film failed, but new Tom and Jerry episodes began airing on television in 1992. The new series lasted for a decade, finally ending in 2002. Since then, the "Tom and Jerry" characters have appeared in advertisements for Cartoon Network and Warner Home Video. In early 2007, Metro-Goldwyn Mayer/Turner Entertainment Co. decided to stop animating Tom and Jerry shorts after 70 years. Although the characters will appear in theatrical releases from Warner Bros., they will continue to appear on television from Turner Broadcasting System with Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc. Animation Department working on them. cfa1e77820
